Ghoul AU
Setting: Modern (Tokyo Ghoul universe)
Summary:
[Warning: May contain spoilers for Tokyo Ghoul, and may slightly diverge from canon]
Arian is once again an orphan in the 4th ward, having barely eluded death at a young age upon seeing his parents viciously slaughtered at the hands of a ravenous Ghoul. Because of this, he harbors a debilitating phobia of Ghouls, unable to even talk about them without skirting a panic attack. But this becomes his driving reason to stay at the top of his class and land a prestigious scholarship in the 13th ward - a place where Ghouls are rumored to be nonexistent.
Eren is a hybrid Ghoul with both Ukaku, Rinkaku, and Bikaku kagune, giving him both enormous power and unbeatable advantage in battles. Because of this, he became the “god of the 13th ward” at a young age, and keeps a very tight reign on his subordinates. Rather than murder, Eren has found a way to make a shaky alliance with the CCG and procure access to hospitals, crematories, morgues, and suicide sites to attain deceased bodies. Any Ghoul that attacks a human, be it from a neighboring ward or one of his own, Eren acts swiftly with punishment; however, for the most part, he’s highly respected for being able to attain a way of life that most Ghouls yearn for deep down.
Eren and Arian meet under very mundane circumstances, and become fast friends for over 6 months before Arian timidly brings up the idea of becoming romantically involved (in his own terribly subtle way). Eren only declines because he learned of Arian’s phobia, and feels too conflicted with letting himself get so attached to someone he will only hurt. Fortunately (or unfortunately) for him, the decision was solidified on its own when Arian gets attacked at a station on the border of the 13th ward, and Eren rushes to his aid. Upon learning that Eren is a Ghoul, Arian’s initial reaction was pure fear and betrayal, and he retreats to his home, convinced that Eren was chasing him and on was the verge of being killed.
Eren deludes himself into thinking he needs to kill Arian to keep his identity safe (since the CCG aren’t always so forgiving), as well as the lives of his subordinates and countless humans that may perish if Eren is killed. But he stays closeby Arian’s apartment purely due to his worry for the young boy, and ends up sneaking in through a window on the fifth night Arian stayed inside without adequate sustenance. Somehow, the two are able to come to an understanding, and continue to be close, though it takes a long time for Arian to truly become completely comfortable with Eren again.
